Description
In the early 1600s three very different families with three very different secrets settled on the north shore of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Four hundred years later their legacy lives on in Devilshire, Massachusetts, a town driven by the local university, tourism, and a surprisingly large supernatural community. Its idyllic New England facade hides a dark past and an even darker future, if certain individuals and creatures about town have their way. While the locals couldn't necessarily put a finger on why they avoid going out at night, they know better than to question the instinct. After all, when the sun goes down, there is no pity for the unwary. Devilshire is a MUX set in the universe of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. While familiarity with the television shows may be helpful it is not necessary. Our game wiki is very extensive and includes rules, characters, and a whole lot of extras. There are no Feature Characters on Devilshire, we deal with original characters; you shape the world around you and you are the heroes of our stories. Nobody the hell cares what Giles is doing and the game is not Slayer-centric, anyone can be the big star! A wide variety of character options are available including slayers, empowered warriors, demons, psychics, werewolves, magic users, and plain but never ordinary humans. Centuries ago, an English colony was founded as a bastion for religious freedom. Today, coastal community of Devilshire lives a sleepy existence as a small, Massachusetts college town... on the surface. Each of the four leading families of Devilshire have their own, occult secrets. Phantom, black hounds roam the banks of the nearby river. An increasing number of demons have moved into the area, drawn by forces they don't even notice, much less comprehend. The faerie troop shifts in unrest as the time of the tithe approaches. The Hunger Waits. Devilshire is a MUX set in the universe of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. Players take on the role of original characters in present day Devilshire, Massachusetts. A wide variety of character options are available, including slayers, empowered warriors, faerie, demons, psychics, werewolves, magic users, and plain but never ordinary humans. [2]

I had heard very good things regarding Devilshire and its playerbase. Even though I have had no experience when it comes to WoD muds, let alone Buffyverse, I heard that the roleplay was excellent. After sniffing about on their wiki and their grid as a guest, I decided to make a character. First, the pros. The staff is very welcoming, helpful, and generous. While I was a bit miffed that their character generation had no code to manipulate one's stats (you have to do it via pencil and paper), staff was genuinely eager to help me out and get things situated as to what they wanted. Also, I have to say that their wiki is perhaps the most detailed I've ever seen when it comes to theme from a game. And the background and setting is just fantastic, allowing the player to easily slip into the character and create a background. If I must say, getting onto the grid is a relatively painless process. That's about where it ends, unfortunately. Now the cons. I've known a lot of games where people just idle about, and it would seem the Devilshire is that sort of game. Most of the players idle out in the OOC chat room shooting the breeze. Most of these conversations seem to involve talking about their own characters or what their characters have done in the past. This is ironic because they could go out and express these qualities through roleplay. It would seem that most of the players have been involved in the game for quite some time and tend to all play in this small circle of friends. Anyone else seems to be excluded from this clique. As a newbie to the game, I felt very lost in these OOC conversations, as I know nothing about past happenings on the game nor am acquainted with this circle of regulars. I also noticed that when I attempted to engage various players in conversations, subjects were changed or I was ignored. What rp I did notice on the grid seemed to be between characters and their immediate relations or friends. Devilshire looks like a great game. Now if you can just get anybody to play it.
