Description
HogwartsMOO was one of the first online Harry Potter themed roleplay games, and it is now celebrating its tenth year as an active MOO! The theme has split to an alternate universe, as none of the main characters from the books will ever show up, nor will the storylines contained in those books ever appear on-game. The game is set in the past, currently in the 1930's. There is ample opportunity for roleplay in any of a number of Wizarding areas, including, but not limited to Hogwarts, Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, and players are welcome to play any number of wizarding roles, student and adult alike. We have a fully developed grid with useful commands for logging, pose retrieval, detailed character information and many, many other features contained in-game. We do not, however, have any coded spells or equipment, nor 'skill levels' or stats, prefering instead for players to use their imaginations and roleplay appropriately and responsibly. Please feel free to visit our website, read a log or two, and give us a visit! Roleplay veterans and newbies alike are welcome to give us a try!

HogwartsMOO is a Harry Potter-inspired roleplaying game, set originally in the early 1900's but now entering the 1920's on a 4:1 timescale (a term corresponds to seventeen weeks). Our theme is non-canon, capturing the charm of Wizarding society without Rowling's storyline. None of the novels' feature characters (or relatives) will ever appear in our world. Instead, key roles are held by player-created characters. Our focus is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but we have an extremely flexible creation system, allowing players to have multiple characters in roles ranging from infant to student (any year) to professional adult in any of several dozen magical careers (and we're open to more). Our goal is fun but realistic roleplay: we offer extensive help systems and infrastructure (such as personal logging, reposes-on-demand, and House points in hourglasses) and detailed areas such as London, Diagon Alley, Hogwarts (!), Hogsmeade, and the Forest. However, we have no coded spells or levels; our players are far more creative than code could ever be. Visit our webpage, check the Online Characters listing, read a few logs, and explore our world! We doubt you'll be disappointed. [3]

I first found the place mostly dead. However staying on for a day brought some people on, but apparently no staff. I say no staff because if they are there, they're invisible and refuse to receive any personal requests. When one announced himself on the public channel, he was both abrasive and sarcastic. I found the players mildly helpful, but after asking a specific question, was told to go reread through a tutorial area for a 3rd time (in a very sarcastic manner). After making a character, I was promptly banned without warning or even being informed. I can't speak to the atmosphere on this place, but I would highly recommend looking elsewhere for a roleplay environment. This one seems obvious to frustrate and annoy any new players.

The HogwartsMOO administration regrets that this player had such a soured experience, but would like to offer a few comments on the matter: The game has been around for quite a bit of time and in that time, procedures for contacting the wizzen have been established. The player in question wanted nothing to do with these accepted procedures, which all players, regardless of tenure on the game, are expected to follow. The claim that the administration is unavailable is therefore inaccurate, as we respond promptly to all requests made in the proper venues. In addition to this, the player wanted private consultation regarding a potential character concept which is not common practice on the game. Players are expected to go through the character application process at which point the guides and admin will make comments about which parts of the application need to be revised to fit with the theme of the game. As for the player being banned without notice, due to some very aggressively rude behavior, the administrators decided that it would be in the best interest of the other players that this new player not be invited back. We do not enjoy employing this practice, but in the interest of game harmony and the interest in keeping our guides from being harassed, we chose this option as the best. If the player would like to discuss the issue further, he is welcome to send an email to the administrator email listed on the game's listing and we will respond as soon as possible in more detail.

I was not rude. I neither verbally assaulted the staff, nor did I harass the players. I was not asked to leave, nor at any point informed of an offense taken on that part of any one present. My behavior was sound, the behavior of your staff, however, was not. I stand by my comments and behavior. While I understand that any individual allowed access to such an environment is there by suffrage, that does not excuse a lack of civility on the part of your staff. You have some gall to call my behavior rude, much less aggressively so. Any requests made on my part to contact staff, were in attempt to prevent wasting both my time and the staffs, where said procedure would obviously do both. In reference to your availability, I expect any staff on such an environment who is supposed to be on duty or handling player interactions, to be visible to those players. I find it disrespectful to the players when staff is intentionally marking themselves as unavailable at all times. My actions were polite, and any requests I made were done first by requesting a consultation publicly, with an intent to address the issue privately. As to whether you 'enjoy' banning people without notice. I will again remark that it was indeed without notice. There was no behavior that I employed that was specifically banned on your site, nor did you request that I cease and desist any such behavior. So as far as I can tell your behavior was either out of some inborn malice, or from pure laziness in regards to human interaction. Neither of these traits do I find particularly endearing, or even remotely respectable. I suggest, if you found my behavior unendurable, that you post a remark in your opening messages. Perhaps to make sure everyone understands you can address it as such: 'Any argument, or even disapproval of policies current, prior, or as yet unimplemented, will be met with immediate site banning. If you have any redress on this, please leave now. Failure to leave before making such objections known, either publicly or privately among staff, will be handled by immediate site banning. You will not be warned, nor will the issue be discussed now, or later. Thank you, and your cooperation is neither needed nor wanted.' Such a message would, I believe, get across both the behavior and intent that I perceived your staff to hold.

I played on HogwartsMOO for years, and while I was not present for what happened with this player I don't find it hard to believe. HogwartsMOO used to be a fun place full of quality RP, but that isn't the case anymore. The administration were always invisible and unapproachable by the time I left, and this account only confirms that this is still the case. If anyone is looking for a laid-back, fun Hogwarts game, this isn't it.
