Second Pass MUSH takes place two centuries after the devastating effects of the First Pass on the Pern colony, shortly before the start of the Second Pass. Despite facing the inevitable return of Thread and intermittent geological instability, the colonists have thrived in the Southern Continent - growing to a population of a little over 20,000 humans protected by four Weyrs of dragons. At the start of the Second Pass, however, Pern is going through growing pains. Ownership of land is increasingly the way to power on Pern, and class divides are growing quickly while civil rights for women and minorities are eroding. Uncertainty is the prevailing mood, especially as the Weyrs voice concern over the number of dragons available to fight Thread. The technology that enabled the settlement of the planet is rapidly fading - all prognoses suggest that the people born on Pern after this generation will be less literate, with shorter lifespans. Rural Pern is quickly becoming very different from the Pern of the major Stakeholds and the capitol of Pern, Xanadu Town, where Second Pass MUSH is set. The planet was intended to be colonized as an independent utopian retreat of citizen farmers. As this dream slips further and further out of the people's grasp, what will become of the planet Pern?

Welcome to Second Pass MUSH. Here we explore an alternate timeline starting just before the Second Pass. Our overarching theme is how Pern might have looked before two centuries of Thread have deteriorated the technological and sociological levels of the populace. In order to avoid conflict with the events as described in the books, our timeline breaks off from canon partway through Dragonsdawn, where our Pernese colonists chose to stay on the Southern Continent when the volcano at Landing erupted. Avoiding this major disruption means that our Pern's technology levels and social structures are somewhat different from what is laid out in Red Star Rising (US Dragonseye). Second Pass MUSH is running at a 2:1 IC:RL time ratio. This allows us the opportunity to develop rich and nuanced characters and to play these characters in deep detail throughout the enormous change which is coming to Pern: the second Threadfall! It's a time of uncertainty for people who have seen videos of the destruction wrought by the last Pass, who are not certain if the dragon population is sufficient, who have become accustomed to a way of life that may not be sustainable for many more years. Here, we explore a world on the cusp of change.
