Description
Ten years in the making, Wormhole MUD was based upon the popular EliteMUD game engine, although with 100% original areas - nothing you've seen elsewhere. All our areas have a science fiction theme, either original or based upon favourites such as Star Wars, Terminator, Babylon 5, Star Trek and more... The Wormhole itself is a white hole that spews out matter from a thousand spacefaring civilisations. Alien artefacts, the hulks of starships... and occasional survivors such as our players. They find themselves in a game-world of great opportunity - and great menace. Wormhole MUD's expanded game engine includes a number of special features that support the science fiction theme. Having trouble with a tough opponent? Why noy leave a trail of landmines for it to blunder into? Still having a hard time? Try throwing in a grenade from an adjacent room. Or sniping. Or get yourself powered up with a selection from almost 100 psi powers, fire up your lightsaber and go toe-to-toe. You decide. Keep an eye out for components that you can use to build upgraded weapons, vehicles, potions and more. Enjoy our scripted questing system, automated remorting system, and the ability to fly starships between planetary and orbital facilities, and beyond. Join a clan... or form one of your own. We invite you to join us. Resistance... is futile.

I think that Wormhole is the best mud ever! It came out a very, very long time ago, and it just keeps coming back. It is rather quiet right now but it has seen amazing activity and has extensive zones and many unique features. It has hundreds of zones, a remote system. There even is a special eq system and fighting system. When ever I try a new mud ... it just does not compare to the Wormhole! I really hope to see many new faces ;) I am sure that you will love it once you get to know it!

I love this mud. I love the way all the rooms are described with care. No endless forests where are the rooms look the same. The care and attention that must have gone into some of the zones is amazing! And these descriptions and objects aren't just detailed: they're funny too. There are small jokes everywhere you look, if you bother to look. Nothing and nobody is safe. The mud's areas are about 50% star wars based, and the rest from other films, books or original. Each is... well I think you'd have to say... 'Sweded'. Wormhole's immortals are insane. Certifiable. They are very fair and adult when necessary. They they'll bombard a crowded room with yeast grenades. (Which cause everybody in the room to 'create food' when they detonate.) It's that kind of place. Even when you're trying to be sensible, it's worth getting killed just for the wacky flame that a mob will put out when you die. If you just want to slash your way through the world, that's possible to. I'm a medic though, so I need to be more sociable. If I have one regret about the Wormhole, its that there should be more players. I often collect ingredients and make potions... darn it, I need more customers!

Great mud :) What else do you need to know....Wormhole has a good combat and class system, remorting options to keep you interested long-term and a well established set of areas and mobs. There is a handy wiki for all the classes and powers etc, and the ingame teleport system makes getting around much easier than 'run dying to random high level aggro stuff for hours on end' type muds. As far as playing goes, everyone has been helpful so far, the wizzes are active and everything works :) No complaints from me, see you there :)

I stumbled upon wormhole while trying to find a combination of a pair of my favorite pastimes, Text-Based Adventure, and Science Fiction. Countless years later, and I'm still addicted. Classes, races, remorting. They're all buzzwords to me. It doesn't matter if the base isn't solid. And the base in this case is some very solidly built areas. Wormhole was the first mud I ever played for more than a week, and that was only because I enjoyed the writing so much. Sci-Fi muds are difficult to come by. And most are limited in scope. Wormhole combines the best elements of so many ideas. You can run through an ewok village, check out the Klingon homeworld, eat lunch at Milliways, or enter one of the original creations. You've got blasters and lightsabers, giant ants and cyberspace programs, a planet where plants are mobile and animals are rooted to the ground, and a dueling system to battle to be the strongest on the mud. Many of the zones are written with humor and entertainment in mind. I often return to areas that I'd otherwise have no business in, just to reread some of the witty descriptions. I have recently made the transition from Player to Builder, and I hope to see Wormhole continue to grow. New areas are under development, along with new technologies to improve the player experience. The only thing that Wormhole is really lacking right now is players. It's tough to recover from a long hiatus, but if more people could see what I see in Wormhole, I'm sure it'd packed in no time.

This a realy nice sci-fi MUD with lots of areas. Star Trek, Star Wars, Bladerunner, Babylon 5, and a lot of other ones too. The commands are easy to get used to, and the rooms are well described. It is probably my favourite MUD that I have ever played.

I'm an experienced mudder. An addict, even. I know my way around quite a few different codebases, and I've seen altogether too many small, new muds created by people who instinctively know they want to run a game rather than play in one, and who get hold of the source and put up a(nother) mud. I call this the stock CircleMUD cyndrome... Midgaard, Harold, fidos, gnome swords, troglodytes... the works. So some kids installed a MUD and they're learning OLC. So what? It ends up as another short-lived clone with about six players. Wormhole clearly started life as a Circle, but it's been given a complete makeover in terms of the mud world. Midgaard has become a space station and, something like a cross between Deep Space Nine and Babylon Five. (It's got a Bajoran priest, but there's also a place called Below Levels.) If I have a criticism of Wormhole, it's that there is no clear game culture. There are dark jedis, the borg, mad max, the matrix and HHGTG themes. On the other hand, the area authors have been given a free rein. Many of the zones they have created are labours of love or tributes to a favourite book or film. New code has been added, here and there, creating transporter rooms, light sabers and other pieces of equipment that beef up its sci-fi credentials. A light saber is not just a renamed sword because those who wield it can learn additional skills with it. Wormhole guns do a 'blast' attack. Some need recharging at an electrical outlet; others need a particular kind of bullet. Not all zones are what you might call "grind friendly". Some contain too many puzzles, and these tend to be left alone in favour of places where you can hoover up experience points. (Wormhole is level based with 110 mortal levels, plus remorting. This sounds like a lot, but levelling can be quite fast, with a new skill or a piece of equipment to use every few levels.) All in all, it's a good reworking of the CircleMUD format, with some nice bells and whistles. The approach to PK is a bit odd, in that it's compulsory at the 5th remort... but nobody's forced to take that final remort.

I've been playing the Wormhole MUD since about mid-2002, I'd played a few MUDs before but never really got into them but this one was different... As a newbie, lots of players were happy to help me on my way with some tips and advice about zones to visit and how I could improve my EQ. The good thing was, everyone helps each other but there's still plenty of time for exploration and trial and error. Most times I play there quite a few players on (+a few immos) and the public channels are busy with people chatting about either the game or off topic stuff. The zones are great too, most major sci-fi films/tv shows are there and are reflected well too. In addition to the zones there are also lots of small and large player quests, which I could join in even though I was a relatively low level player. Great fun! In short, I dont have anything bad to say about this MUD - I have got a lot of levels to complete, but look forward to the exploration!!

Well what can i say about wormhole, good place to be, it's not full of people who are all top level with nowhere to go it has a good mix of people of all levels which makes grouping a little easier, this is probably due to the remort system which enables you to start again from level 1 but with the added advantage of customizing your character with remort points, the more times you remort the more remort points you get each time. With the right equipment and a push in the right direction and more importantly taking on board the advice others give you, anyone will be able to do well in this MUD. I'm not saying its easy though its just due to the atmosphere and banter being patted about it makes the time more enjoyable and pass quickly, before you know it you'll be choosing your remort only class like the rest of the old un's. Come along, have a look and feel free to ask any of us for advice or direction. Aziraphale 103 Jedi 2/4 remort

What can I say? Wormhole is a mud that nearly defies description, instead being limited only by imagination. The areas are diverse in theme and large in number, the classes and races allow players to be any of a wide variety of combinations, and the mud is not simply combat based, but has a fair number of puzzles as well that reward the player with equipment and/or bragging rights. The big draw of Wormhole is that it allows players to enter their favorite sci-fi environments, such as the ship from Aliens, Babylon 5, and of course Star Wars and Star Trek themed areas, but it also has a lot of areas based on original ideas as well. Players can fight their favorite enemies be it GELFs, Daleks, Aliens, Klingons, or even Ewoks. They can also make characters styled after specific characters in movies and/or books: races include Ferengis, Replicants, Borg, and Wookiee and some of the classes are Bounty Hunter, Scanner, Space Marine, and of course Jedi and Sith classes. Besides the areas, one of the reasons I've played over the years (and was happy to hear that it is back up) is the remort system, which allows players to go through the 110 levels up to five times - the fifth only available to those that can pass a grueling test that I've yet to see myself. Each time the player remorts, he or she gets the ability to add innate effects, skills, powers, or raise abilities; each remort adds more points that can be used for this purpose. In addition to unlocking remort-only classes and skills, remorting allows for a certain degree of customization of any particular class, whether it is to enhance roleplaying or supplement the inherent abilities of a class/race combination (in my present case it means i'm an assassin that can effectively teleport to or summon my targets ^.^ ) Okay, now the bad side: It's not a perfect mud. Some of the best equipment can be difficult to get as it spawns only on reboot and is often snatched up quickly. Areas can be a little difficult to locate without directions at first, most of them being accessed by a number of transporters around the space station that forms the home of the players; almost anyone can give directions to the place a player is trying to get to, but it can be difficult to find a specific zone unless you have an idea of where to look (on the bright side, the transporters mean that you can get to an area without having to travel a long time to get there). Finally, the player base is currently low, although the mud almost never has no players on. Thus, my review. I'd love to see more people come and join us, and I think that Wormhole - although admittedly not for everyone, since it is sci-fi based - is a mud worth playing.
