I imagine that it is fairly common for reviewers to say that their mud stands out of the crowd, and I don't plan on deviating from that. In my opinion, Dark Legacy has always stood out as a truly unique mud among the many that I have played over the years because of creative features such as star signs, ancestries, its crafting system, and spell system. The player base gradually dropped over the years, but the people that remain are quite friendly and the mud is still actively changing due to the hard work of its coder. When I first began playing Dark Legacy I was given the choice to play as one of several races with humans being given the adding option of choosing one of several star signs that would add various benefits to the character. Since then several patches have been implemented that have introduced other options such as ancestries and opened up star signs to every race. This gives the player a vast number of combinations to choose from when they first create their character. An example of one combination could be a desert troll with the void star sign (immune to magic) and lycanthrope ancestry (added resistances) to create a strong melee character. The ancestry's name also changes as the character levels (a gold dragon pixie would first be called a draconic pixie and later a half-dragon pixie). The player starts off as one class (warrior, rogue, cleric, mage, bard, paladin, psionicist, or ranger), but once they reach level 50 they are allowed to start over with another class as well as their original. After reaching level 50 with three classes they become an epic character with their own unique class name that is assigned based on the combination of classes they chose. A level 50/50/50 character whose classes are a combination of warrior, mage, and cleric would become an Arcane Templar. Epic characters are then allowed to level to their hearts content; gaining bonuses such as regeneration or additional stats as they reach higher levels. Upon reaching epic status the player is also given their own plane of existence (though this is currently disabled as the mud is undergoing changes). The spell system is also unique to Dark Legacy. Rather than requiring the player to obtain a certain level before learning a spell, the player gains a certain number of complexity points in different spell categories such as body for healing spells or physical for attack spells. The amount of complexity you have is based off of factors such as the amount of intelligence you have and the race, star sign, and ancestry you chose. Each spell casting class has a primary and two secondary complexity categories such as physical, basic, and enchanting for mages and body, defensive, and sensory for clerics. Runes can also be added to spells to make them more efficient or to change their properties (adding elemental damage). Crafting has greatly changed over the years. It has from... Read More

The previous reviews are a joke, out of date, and in some cases, written by those who only wish to suck up to the imms. I've played DL for 4 years, and have been the richest, most powerful, most influential player at various times. This is debatable by those who dislike me, but what is not debatable is my commitment to DL. I have spent all my years there teaching anyone that was willing to learn, i have put far more into the game than i got out of it, and was happy to do so. However, the vast corruption among the immortal staff, the corruption among the players that is allowed to go on IF they are friends of said corrupt immortals, all the bugs that go unfixed because Celeborn decides to put NEW code in, rather than fix what's broken, makes Dark Legacy a truly bad mud, one to avoid if you wish to have fun playing, without a lot of politics and crap that most of us try to avoid. The playerbase is dying, down to less than 20 ppl i think, and of those only newbies and cheats are left for the most part(maybe a few decent ppl left, but not many). The buglist is 4 screens long and growing, and instead of worrying about that or the corruption among the admins, they chose to ban my accounts to prevent me from deleting my chars, they were afraid of the reaction of the playerbase. So here now, i give it to you, Dark Legacy, a mud where you can play for years, own everything, have defeated EVERY mob and nearly every player in game, play without breaking ANY rules at all in all that time, and STILL be treated worse than the cheaters for simply speaking your mind. At this time, every player that was banned on dl in the past has been allowed back. The official reason is 'everyone deserves a 2nd chance', even though most of those banned have had dozens of chances already :P And yet, *I* remain banned, even though i have never cheated in any way, never done anything except demand fairness, honesty, and truth from both the immortals, and the playerbase. Enter at extreme risk.

Dark-Legacy is actually a great mud for advance players. Excellent combat system, pet system, prism system (for magic) and crafting system totally out of SMAUG typical range. But.... Due to the creator, 'Celeborn,' poor judgement on whom he assigns to become Caretakers (Immortals), the game is slowly dying off due to corruption amongst the Caretakers. From Emeralites to Multiplaying. Very ridiculous. Celeborn acknowledges this but yet, he does nothing. So the choice is your's to come play or not.

First off, once you start playing, if you like it, you'll probably get addicted. Personally i've tried to quit a couple times but got sucked back in from either my game friends asking me to come back or just getting back into the game once more. It allows you to do quite a bit of different things, from making your own equipment to mining, and even the occasional quest that the immortals give. There are quite a few nice people there, if at first they seem either offensive or rude. And when you meet these people you can join a guild that their in. PvP has finally come back, where you can go about and kill other pvps, but be warned most are protected and it's likely that you'll be slaughtered afterwards IF you arent powerful enough. Overall this mud is my favorite, being here for nearly three years and still finding the game fresh as it was the day i started.

Dark Legacy has the best environment. Players are happy to help new people to the game and do their best to make sure they have everything they need without actually doing everything for them. A map is on the left side of the screen. There are tons of helpfiles and the staff is very helpful.

This MUD is excellent in designing. Player Creation, Many areas, pets, leveing, even epic areas for the higher leveled players. But a huge downfall for this mud is the administration. All the administrators are 'buddy-buddy' and some don't care to help when need be. Some even change rules to better themselves and not the players. If you want to play this MUD is uggest you not complain about the admins, they don't care to help unless its the Owner himself.

In my 14 months of play on Dark Legacy, I've found that there are alot of positive attributes that make this MUD a really good place to play both for new players and old ones. There's a lot more to leveling than being on this MUD: you can craft your own equipment or items using a rather extensive craft system, level endlessly in the form of low-level and epic-level areas, forage for resources, mine for ores gems and stone, roleplay with your fellow man/woman/neuter, raise and level your own pet and give it attributes, customize your character with both glory and epicpoints (which are obtained when you reach the epic level status), etc. Even though multiplaying is restricted, there's no need for it. There's enough players to help satisfy your need for killing tough mobiles or gathering into groups to clear out an area. I've made some good friends too, and the experiences I've received in being part of this MUD is something that I can take with me, no matter where I go. I suggest that people check this MUD out :)

I have participated in many MUD communities, even working on several as a builder and immortal. I find that Dark Legacy has a great player base, interesting and challenging areas, and a leveling system that even the newest players are able to understand. The races are extensive as well are classes. Morphing is a big part of the leveling system, Epic levels are challenging. but once be coming and Epic a player can be truly proud of themselves. There are several ways to be self-sufficient with crafting, mining, lumberjacking to name a few. The staff are informative and most gracious. One other thing I found helpful and interesting is the Justice Council. The members of the council are able to serve as a peace officer of sorts, including sentancing and judging criminal activity. Of all the time I have spent in MUD dungeons. Dark Legacy has acquired a long time and active member. I enjoy every moment I spend.

Crap, I hit the tab key on the last one and forked up the review. My bad :-D (that's what I get for trying to indent on a MUD review) Anyway, I would like to say that this MUD is extremely expansive and ever-evolving, many others have said it, but it's the truth, so I'm saying it again. The head Caretaker (Immortal if you will) makes changes and developements largely based on Player feed-back, sadly though he doesn't get much time to chill out and enjoy the game cause he's working so hard for everyone else to have fun. The "Imms" in Dark Legacy take a background role, only really coming into attention when a player asks for help, when a player is being obnoxious to the other players, and when running a quest. In Dark Legacy there is an amazing amount of leeway for differences in character, allowing people to specialize in particular things, or work on becoming good at everything. There's limited player killing (kept down to Guild Wars -which rarely happen- and arena fights) But if you want a character who happens to be a mage hunter you can make a "void" character (A Voider is a human with a starsign void, which makes him immune to all magic spells, which makes the games bandaging and splinting capabilities very handy- in the event of severed or broken limbs) And then you can combine several runes in a weapon to form a WitchHunter weapon, which decreases the mana of a spell-caster with each hit. Albeit some magic users -like the pixie magic users- can haste themselves to make them attack faster, you can find ways around these. If you want to make a character whose sole purpose is to hunt undead, even after he becomes an epic character (Epic characters are characters who are lvl 50 in 3 different classes, at which point they are given an 'Epic Class' and allowed access to the Epic areas- hard fighting, but the only exp around, encourages grouping but not necessary) As I was saying, if you want to make an Undead Hunter you can make a Paladin/Rogue/Mage or whatever, that way when you get into the Epics and go hunt the undead, you can sever them (only Paladins can sever limbs on Undead) and you can detrap the doors and chests (as well as unlock them) and cast devastating damage spells, or spells of healing, or spells of haste, allowing you to attack and take any actions (including crafting) quicker than normal. But that's only one of the lovely combinations. Each race gets its own inherent abilities; Gnomes are born with high magic resistance, pixies are 25% better at spells than most of the other races; Orcs can be in berserk mode without suffering extra damage penalties due to the wild fighitng style, trolls can regenerate. There are more but I don't want to list them all. Even a bard class, with a song called Psalm of to... Read More

Hey, I just came here to write another review for Dark Legacy.
TopMUDSites.Com Review by on May 6, 2004
Dark-Legacy is one of the top best coded games in the mud world. Yes, we do not have playerkilling, but we do have Tri-class + Epic levelling that goes on and on and on. I love that instead of getting bored and having nothing left to do, we have an option to level endlessly with our epics, or we can go into the many crafts. As an immortal in dark-legacy I see not only the player view, but the immortal view as well. The player base is usually tremendously helpful. There are the few that take their epic place a little overly seriously and get sarcastic with newer players, but rest assured that this does not represent the entire mud. The mud seems to be great for people who want to collect pets, gain gold through crafting, and for people who want to level endlessly. The 8 characters on the account really adds to giving more of a diverse character choice. Alright, I don't know what else to say. This is a great mud, I've been here for 2 years and 3-4 months. Something like that and everytime we've seen players retire, they usually come back. Good sign. :D

This is truly a great mud. When I started playing, I was a *bit* confused, but I got the hang of it and was almost immediately addicted. The combat system is great as well. And also, a little mini-map comes up to the left of the area description text everytime you move; I find this VERY useful, as so do others probably do too. You may also join guilds as well which is very awesome. The fact that the admins/caretakers only tend to certain things and enable YOU, the player to hold power within the game makes this mud even better. That is something a lot of other muds don't let you do, and I personally think that rocks, =). Also, when different information is put upon the screen, it is in a different colour which helps. As mentioned earlier, the majority (95%) of the players are mature. Well, thats the end of this review. If you just give it a try at LEAST, you will more than likely become addicted and eager to level up. Go to the site and just check out the different material on there and get a more general idea of what you'll expect in this game and then click at the top on the 'Start Adventuring!' and play! For me, I chose the second option to download the client and play it right on my computer located on my desktop to play it right from home. ^-^

Dark Legacy is a mud that has taken quite a few steps toward that goal of originality. The builders have worked diligently to add unique areas to replacing the usual stock areas, piles of unique and interesting equipment, and many well thought out class and race selections. Leveling is challenging, but enjoyable, with the emphasis being placed on roleplaying done after you have developed your character. The deities, worship, and favor system works well permitting corpse retrieval and recall. A nicely developed guild and sect system is in place. Crafting which allows players to be self-sufficient and able to make a special items to sell. Roleplay is welcomed and appreciated, but certainly not required. The immortals are not only newbie friendly, but also participate in much of the roleplay including assistance with the those just entering into the world of RP. This mud seems to have plenty to offer to experienced roleplayers, and to the player who is more hack and slash oriented. Overall, this mud seems to be quite enjoyable, and I have found myself spending many hours (probably more than I should) immersed into it.

*The previos review is also writen by me* When i first started playing dl, i found it quite hard but most of the players(about 75%) were very kind and gave me free equipment told me where to level etc..etc.. But when u remort in2 3 classes and start to epic a LOT of newbies will ask u questions so try 2 answer them like other people answered u when u were a newbie 2. The crafting system is really great but would be better if a practice crafts system is introduced. The spell system is unique and allows u to use spells that, in other muds, u probably cannot use. etc a psionicist being able to use breath(a standard smaug spell) that in other muds mage is usually the only class that can use it. Dl is a great mud. You can hardly run out of things to do. And now its time 4 the review to end and i go back to trying to increase the level of my pet gryphon.

Dark Legacy is a really special mud. the extended battle system really gives you the feel of the battle. The ascii map is really detailed and can show you the recommanded levels for the area. The pillar travel system can enable you to travel between major cities (and the mine)in just a simple command.
TopMUDSites.Com Review by on Oct 29, 2003
(Beware very detailed and kind of long review ahead!) This is my review of a MUD called Dark Legacy. It is a game set in a Dungeons and Dragon type fantasy world. If I’m not mistaken, some of the things from DnD are borrowed. (I might be wrong, I only played the game once in my life - and I was only a half of one session) Now on to the review: For the ease of the reader, I will break it down into sections. (If I didn’t I might just rant on and on about my likes and dislikes.) Keep in mind, even though I’ve been MUDing on and off for about a year now, I still consider myself a MUD Newb. Let’s begin will the PROs Skills A very long list of spells. Like similar games, you have a defined list of skills that you are able to practice when you reach a certain level. But in this game, you don’t practice with points awarded to you once you reach the next level. You are taught the bare basics (1.0 of a skill) and must go out into the world and practice so you can become better. Spells: Another long list of spells. You can pick and choose which spells you want to learn and conjure them into things called prisms. You can also find these in treasure chests. You can further customize your spells with runes. For example you can extend the duration or make it more powerful. Crafts: I love how you can start crafting, even at a low level. Want to make a shortbow? Just buy a axe and saw form the tool shop and head into the woods. The help files guide you all the way through the process. Also, you learn by doing. No need for a higher level character to teach you. Also, it seemed like everything in the game can be made by the players. Everything from furniture to weapons to food. I really like that feature. Shops and houses Speaking of the players. Rooms, houses and even mansions are available for players. I’ve always like that in a game. It really makes the player feel like she is apart of something. Shops, stalls and tents are available also, for all those crafters and other merchants. Pets: Hatch a pet from an egg then teach it tricks and how to fight. I haven’t tried it yet, but I really want to. So many pets to choose from. Kittens, hamsters, dragons...just to name a few. Newbie School. I’m not really one for newbie schools, but DL’s Academy was fine. There are interactive mobs that will answer you questions about skills, spells and crafts. And a lot of explanations of the game. Combat I like that the combat actually involved the player. While with some games, you type “kill goblin”, in DL you have options. Start the fight from the shadows by BACKSTAB with you dagger, then move in close JAB,... Read More

I first started my MUDing years ago, back in the age where GemStone III and other MUDs were considered revolutionary. I even played around a little on the BBS "MUDs" back so long ago. However, nothing I have encountered so far has quite matched up to my experience in Dark Legacy. The world is HUGE...there are many things to see, many monsters to slay, many many interesting people to meet. The combat, quest, and epic systems are incredibly original, and huge improvements and developments have been made even since I started playing. Heck, the caretakers are working on huge new areas at the moment that will make the MUD even better! I would say that Dark Legacy is one of the best MUDs I have ever played with its diversity, originality, and potential. If you ever see me online, drop me a TELL, i'd be glad to help you out :-D.

The world map is huge, you can wonder for hours without bumping into a site to go to. World creatures will kick the crap out of you even if your level 50/50. Duration of day/night kinda long. Not many quests so it gets old quick.. fun to level, nice spells, abilites, cool mapping system. No Drow race option for newbies? usualy 15-25 people on (10 are usually the same people). People are friendly, Auction system awsome. ITs not super social though... I played till level 50.. im not going any further i think.. time to find some place smaller with more quests/adventures and more devloped.

Dark Legacy is one of the best MUDs on the internet. When i started playing i found everyone to be really friendly and helpful. Dark Legacy has it's own home made mud client and is easy to understand, and it uses colours to separate information. It has guilds, Quests, Crafts, A World map and many rooms to explore. I would recommend Dark Legacy to any MUD players, or anyone who reads this, but be warned DARK LEGACY IS ADDICTIVE!

When I first started playing Dark-Legacy I got frustrated quickly, the place was confusing (mostly because I was new) and upon my first visit the local player base was rather crass and extremely caustic. Finding anything was difficult for me (and still is some times) and I got frustrated at that too, and I was antisocial and had a very large.....loner mentality ;), and this didn't help much because Dark-Legacy is a community. Whether two different characters are of rival guilds or not, they're still part of the same community. And that's one of Dark-Legacy's most appealing features, I am not a people person in the "real" world, but in Dark-Legacy I get along with practically everyone. More and more I find myself playing largely because the people have become so amiable. Since I first began (late '99 - '00) I've had several different characters, and I have seen many faces come and go. I have also been around to witness Dark-Legacy's evolution. It has grown by leaps and bounds with no small effort from the caretakers Celeborn, Harax, Zeraphin (Used to be Ayame) and Isabelle. Dark-Legacy offers an innovative and refreshingly original world of beasts, magics, and daring deeds. The combat system is unparalled in any of the other MUDs I've played, from Aliens Vs. Predators to StuphMUD (one of my old favorites which is sadly dead and gone...) And the crafts system allows for unique character developement. Dark-Legacy offers something for everybody, and is worth the time to check it out. So if you're up to the challenge here's the site: www.dark-legacy.com And hey, if you see me on drop a line I'm always happy to shoot the proverbial crap. See you in Alora! -Steeve Broderick, Slayer of Kings

Dark-Legacy is more of an updated mud. Most of the other muds around are mostly original and are similar. Celeborn the Coder of Dark-Legacy makes everything more different from other muds. This mud is sustain and stable. Players usually help one and another. Guilds are more populated than Clans though. I recommend you to go to Dark-Legacy and play. You will experience a whole new world that other muds doesn't hold.

Hiya, if you're reading this review, know this, it takes more than reading to fully know how enjoyable this mud is. Enter the game. This mud currently has quite a few areas for a newbie to grow quickly & graduate for an application with one of the player-run guild or to remain with the newbie academy & join the academy staff. Questing in my experience so far is to actually help you explore the vast (extremely massive world) lands of this mud and not all questing is easy. Some puzzles are hard but once you get to solve them, well, you feel kinda have a sense of achievement. Quests are found all over the place (some stock, dunno if i used the right term, some guild run) Items, on a positive note, there are a lot of them . But, on the other hand, it is more for the higher levels. But then, you'll survive (just like me) and learn to know to efficiently equip thyself. You know what, I recently got myself a pet dog (Alfie is his name) and we had been journeying together. He's good, & I have been training this fella up. If you come round to the game, I'll show you a bagful of tricks he can do. Well, I'm trying hard to reach level 20 by this weekend and with all the help from the high-level players (casting spells that make your armour reach almost god-hood help :P) I should get there. The players are another plus point. I have never seen a mud where players are so nice & friendly. Most of them behave very maturely (some due to age,but some mature beyond their years} and there are people who are keen to help (like me :P) but run the danger of giving all the fun away. There are lots more, but I think you'll just feel bored reading my otherwise boring commentry. Go For It. Play the Game. From a dedicated (aka addicted) player.

I have been playing this MUD for about two months now, and I love it. This is only the second MUD I have played, and it's interaction for those unfamiliar with MUDing is wonderful. It is simple, easy to learn and use, and very user friendly. I played Retaliation for a little bit, and was so confused I wasn't sure if I was coming or going. Not the case with Dark Legacy. You guys have earned a life-long player here. Thanks.

Hi there, my name is Celeborn, and I have been one of the main imms on Dark Legacy from the beginning. I’ve tried to take an unbiased view of Dark Legacy, as far as that is possible. :) On the positive side, compared to the former mud I immed on I enjoy the friendly atmosphere of DL immensely, part of which is result of less strict rules and the usage of ‘Caretakers’ instead of immortals. Recently we replaced the stock academy with a great interactive newbie area that should make its builder proud (thanks Ruarc! :). DL provides both a hack and roleplay environment, especially with the permadeath characters, multiclassing, and working (tailoring, inventing, etc) skills. Castle and Guild code are my favourite parts of DL, which allow players to build their own castle or guildtower including traps, room descriptions and furniture. Players can make guilds on their own, customising anything from ranks to skills. Guild shops and guild houses are also possible, enough places to spend your gold. The new website turned out quite nice, with a manual and several clients. On the negative side, the number of players online may be low outside peak hours which makes it hard to make new players feel welcome and build a bigger pbase. The mud hasn’t reached it final form in both code and areas, so it shifts form pretty quickly. I often have the feeling DL’s account system may be a bit too confusing. DL offers no extra Classes and Races beyond the stock ones. DL still has some stock areas and the helpfiles are polluted here and there. Anyway, there are enough points to improve. Take a peek at the website, I’m confident you will enjoy it. ;)

I have never seen such dedicated admin as what I have seen on this mud. When they tell you they are gonna do something, its amazing, it actually happens. Coupled with friendly players, new and stock areas, this mud looks like it could go all the way to the top. Keep up the great work guys!

This is a very wonderful mud, I have played here since the beggining. Most areas original or heavily modified. Very new and expansive code, and well qualified Admin/Coder. Just the right amount of everything, and a lot more of the stuff that makes muds great.

This is one of the most interesting and innovative muds I have ever seen. New updates to code base are made almost daily, and if there is a bug that shows up it is addressed promptly and fixed shortly there after. I have been on this mud for about 4 months, and I don't plan on leaving, I was very impressed with the Imm staff, they are friendly as well as the players are very helpful also.
